My memoirs are, essentially, a collection of my own personal recollections of meetings and encounters with the wide assortment of fascinating people with whom it has been my privilege to come into contact throughout my professional career.
The book contains accounts of my experiences with well-known and intriguing individuals in the public eye, garnered throughout my private life and professional career as a mainstream journalist, corporate researcher, Conservative MP, published author and freelance writer.
Having worked in a number of interesting positions, from the mainstream media to national corporations and the British government, I have been fortunate to meet many household names and famous (or infamous) people over the years and I believe that the events I have witnessed and conversations I have been a part of will be of great interest to a plethora or readers.
I studied at St John's College, Cambridge, from 1955 to 1958, where I was a scholar of History and then Economics. My presidency of the Cambridge union in 1958 subsequently brought me into touch with many other ex-presidents, who became MPs and/or ministers.
In 1959 I began writing signed feature articles for Nigel Lawson at the Financial Times, afterwards moving on to the Economics Department of GKN and was later seconded to the Treasury, Public Enterprises Division.
I joined the Daily Telegraph as Economics Editor in 1967 and had many engaging assignments and quite a lot of travel, focusing mainly on transport. I then became Conservative MP for Nantwich, Cheshire, from 1974 to 1979, after which I worked in the City on mergers and acquisitions.
I wrote a lot in my free time in the 1980s and '90s. At different times, I had three regular columns, mainly concerning electronics and I wrote for the Sunday Telegraph for 5 years, again writing Economics Editorials. I attended President Kennedy's last press conference in November 1963 and wrote about that in some detail.
I have had two books published; 'While England Sleeps' in 1971, with Arlington Books and 'Electronics in Banking' in 1982, through the Common Misintelligence Unit. I have continued to write on a freelance basis since then. I have a portfolio of articles for 'Order! Order!', the ex-MPs magazine, which provide interesting background to my memoirs.
