Synopsis

"Absalom tells the story of a prince who attempts to usurp the crown from his own father. King David presides over a golden age in Israel. He is a humble and devout ruler, but his son Absalom has markedly different qualities. When the prince defies his father he is forced to flee into exile. David shows him mercy, but it becomes clear on his return that Absalom harbours treacherous ambitions. The prince soon nurtures a conspiracy that rises to civil war, and culminates in a tragic ending for father and son.

Inspired by a remarkable incident in Hebrew literature, Absalom is written in the spirit of Elizabethan tragedy, and faithfully preserves the style and form of that genre."
