Two young brothers Stanley and Art and Art's soft toy Rabbit, are evacuated from the East End of London during the Second World War Blitz. This was a war time government scheme to keep the children safe from the falling bombs. They are billeted with a kindly lady and her dog, Gwen, in a cottage on the edge of The New Forest. The brothers and their two friends, Alice and Freddie, climb an ancient oak tree in the forest and meet different historical characters whom they help with their problems.
