This book is in remembrance of all those who lived & died at Ballinrobe Workhouse, Co. Mayo and of those who died on the roads and in ditches trying to reach it. Ballinrobe Writer's Group have written creative stories of the lives of paupers and their experience based on factual events. Other members wrote poetry as their reaction to the subject, while some provided context with the architectural layout and daily routine of those who lived and died there. Yet others recalled their memories or connections to the workhouse through family members. Finally the Writers included factual and creative stories and poems about the 26 Earl Grey Orphans - girls aged between the ages of 14 and 18, and their voyage, for a new life in Australia in 1849 on the ship the Panama.

Original brochure. Etat : Wie neu. 211 p., ill. An impeccable, as new copy. - Introduction by Averil Staunton: After decades of interest in the Ballinrobes Workhouse Earl Grey Orphans, curiosity about their conditions before they departed for a new life in Australia, prompted me to study the Minute Books and the original plans of the Workhouse in Ballinrobe plus primary sources. An invitation to fellow members of Ballinrobes Active Retirement Writers Group in September, 2022 to join me in paying tribute to those who lived and died in Ballinrobe Workhouse resulted in this publication. Some Writers wrote creative stories of the lives of paupers and their experience based on factual events. Other members wrote poetry as their reaction to the subject, while some provided context with the architectural layout and daily routine of those who lived and died there. Finally, others recalled their memories or connections to the workhouse through family members. 1 would like to thank the Writers for their positive response to this difficult subject and horrific time in our local history. They put their skill and imagination to work in order to create characters and stories that could illustrate the daily reality of life in the workhouse. - Contents: Copyright Page -- Introduction -- The Ballinrobe Writers' Group -- Learning about the Ballinrobe Workhouse.
