Cat Adam - once the bullied, fat schoolboy - needs to hide out, so he accepts an invitation from his old school acquaintance, the Rajah, to travel to the forgotten princely state of Dusa Mathavasi.

Cat is on the run from The Trustees, who require the return of their priceless da Salò double bass, on loan to him since he graduated from the Royal Academy.

Assuming the title of Master of the Rajah's Music, he arrives to discover an aimless court in a derelict palace. Denied the luxury he craves, nevertheless here he finds the love of his life, Dr Vijinalakshmi Rajmani, head of the women's hospital.

But it isn't to last, as Cat becomes ensnared in politics, and takes to the road once more, hauling the valuable instrument along with him.

Present Day

Dr Philip Adam has become the self-professed authority on Dusa Mathavasi, his interest driven not least by the desire to find the missing double bass, and restore the family fortune.

He receives word that the site of his great-great-uncle's former bungalow has been found, so he travels to the forgotten edge of the subcontinent.

Philip fails to locate the da Salò, but he too runs headlong into the politics of the newly oil-rich enclave.

Back at home, he realises he's not finished with Dusa Mathavasi - and hopes the same is true of the double bass.

Roger Ashton-Griffiths wrote about Anglo-Indian literature for his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. He works creatively across a range of disciplines, as musician, artist, director and writer. He began his career as a singer with English National Opera, and is now best known as a British character actor, with screen appearances ranging from PT Barnum in Gangs of New York to Mace Tyrell in Game of Thrones. He might occasionally be spotted flying a glider above the fields of East Anglia.
