Synopsis

This book is based on a true story from the winter of 1953. Many of the people mentioned are real, but most have now passed away. 119 Essex lives were claimed by the floods, dying from drowning or exposure on 31st January 1953 and the following days. Seven people died in Great Wakering (five of whom lived on Home Farm Camp) and two on Foulness Island. Many people worked nonstop throughout the disaster, risking their own lives to save others, the ultimate altruistic act anyone can make. Some were recognised for their bravery and some not. I’d like to tell you their stories, as their accounts are incessantly linked to one fatal night.
