Synopsis

A chance encounter turns two loners to lovers, and heartbreak to hope, as they journey along the spectacular 100-mile South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne, and from tragedy to comedy.

This novel explores the people and places along the oldest National Trail in our youngest National Park. It’s both a guide to the actual South Downs Way as well as the way of love and life; such as how to dispose of an ex-boyfriend’s sock, and wash your knickers on a hike. Hear the myths about the Celtic dragon, golden calf and dyke-digging devil. Meet real smugglers and fake Second World War airfields. Pick up some Anglo-Saxon lingo such as bread-and-cheese-friend and the all-important womanate. Find out about the world’s deepest hand-dug well, European grass skiing, and the UK’s first cable car – all on the South Downs.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Husband - Hiker - Headcreature

Husband
Having been subjected to many dubious romcoms, with predictable storylines and shallow characters, David thought he could do better. He was specifically advised by members of his family not to go down the romance route in his first novel. So officially, this book isn’t a romcoms and had to have the working title of South Downs Way of Love-ly Facts, which sounds a little less lovey-dovey. However, David hopes this isn’t just a romance but a comical adventure, as he follows in the footsteps of his uncle, the late Anthony Marriott, who co-wrote the West End’s longest running farce, No Sex Please, We’re British.

Hiker:
David has completed the South Downs Way on his mountain bike several times, preferring ‘fast-hiking-on-two wheels’ than dawdling. However, writing research notes at 30mph down a steep flinty track is quite tricky so, with his wife, daughter and dog, he enjoyed a series of walks along the South Downs Way over the course of a year*. This included a sponsored 26-mile hike from the back of Brighton to Beachy Head, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. David has also drawn on his own family history; his aunt helped invent the famous banoffee pie, and his great grandfather saved Seaford Head, now part of the South Downs National Park, from being smothered in development. *Or at least that was the intention!

Headteacher
Known as ‘Mr E’ (pronounced ‘Mystery’) by many of the children in his schools, Mr Etherton is supported by the infamous headcreature, aka Mr Badger, a small but mischievous puppet with whom he has had many adventures. Mr Etherton, now CEO and exec head honcho extraordinaire, has taken pupils on school trips onto the Downs, including overnight at YHA Truleigh Hill, which is much more fun than Year 6 grammar in the classroom. Ironically Mr E managed to write this book while not being able to untangle the ‘SPAG’-hetti (Spelling, Punctuation And Grammar) of modal verbs, relative clauses and fronted adverbial phrases, unlike the children in his care.
