Synopsis

The American Revolution is in its first year. Jacob Greyson, a common Massachusetts farm boy, dutifully leads his small militia section as they camp along the shores of the Charles River, outside Boston, trapping the British army in the city.

When George Washington arrives and takes command of the New England militia, Jacob is promoted to lieutenant, his 10-man section attached to headquarters. He is tasked with sneaking into Boston to gather information.

Destiny, often described as the woods girl or the girl marksman, is a misfit to most, but she is the love of Jacob’s life. She and Jacob’s brother Jackson insist on accompanying Jacob on the perilous spy mission. Jacob refuses. Spies can be hung. That’s a fate he can never risk for Destiny.

Destiny and Jackson have their way though, and the trio enters Boston at night. They are caught. While separated, Jacob and Jackson both manage escapes, Destiny does not.

Over months Jacob devises plan after plan to bring freedom to the woman he loves. A daring foray to cross Boston Harbor at night results in the death of one of his soldiers and leaves his reputation in disgrace.

Jacob oversees the training of his section, always thinking to the next rescue attempt. In a daring night battle, he captures his childhood friend, who loyally remains in the English Army. He tries negotiating with British generals. Offers trades for Destiny’s release.

Now the cannons on Dorchester Heights are driving the British from Boston. Jacob has one last chance to risk everything to bring home the woman he loves.

“This is a superb book, and Lance Wilkins is an exceptional writer... If you like historical action, gritty and realistic, with a human touch – highly recommended.”
