Synopsis

In this astonishing account of the Supreme Court, full of outwardly starched and somber men and women in black robes who write long and incomprehensible legal treatises on the biggest issues of the day, we have Justice Harry Cashman. Harry is far from the stereotypical justice—and a few of the others have their quirks as well. Recently divorced from his second blonde trophy wife, number three in total, Harry was not looking forward to the start of his fifteenth term that October, desiring to get through it on cruise control. Although Harry takes the work seriously, instead of continuously interrogating lawyers during oral arguments like his colleagues, he spends the time on the bench playing video games on his phone. When octogenarian Justice Judd Quackenbush dies in a salacious situation, all attention turns to who President Harriet Rubin Doyle will appoint to replace him. When Harry and the rest of the country learn her choice is Cashman’s first wife Judith, what he hoped would be a quiet term gets upended and turns disastrous. Or does it. The two couldn’t live together. Can they work together on the highest court in the land? Or will long dormant feelings between the two begin to return? This is the story of the Supreme Court that we wish a justice would really write.
