Synopsis

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER WITH HISTORICAL FICTION ELEMENTS SET IN RURAL SPAIN IN THE 70s

The immediate modernization of a remote level crossing with barriers, and consequently, the desperate loss of Fermina's job, the young level crossing keeper in charge of the place, leads her to announce her suicide in seven days time, on her saint's day. This causes a huge uproar throughout the country, and journalists quickly arrive at the crossing. Among them is Carmela, a reporter from TVE, who manages to live with Fermina during her last days, discovering, through the crossing keeper’s own words, a harsh life filled with abuse, mistreatment, and suspicions of being involved in mysterious disappearances. Fermina knew what happened between the barriers of the level crossing, but what about beyond them?

This is a psychological thriller with historical fiction elements set in rural Spain in the 1970s, narrated in the first person by Fermina, and it unveils a profession that was maliciously created for women, a highly demanding and undervalued occupation that has disappeared and been forgotten in present-day Spain.
