Synopsis

In 1720, two of history’s most famous pirates were sentenced to death in Jamaica. Both in their twenties, Bonny and Read were shockingly young to be facing execution, but their ages weren’t what earned their notoriety:

Women didn’t often live such adventurous and full lives.

Anne has the charm and inheritance that could make her the ideal wife for a Charles-Town gentleman—if he can look past her, shall we say, moral shortcomings. When she finds love with an equally rebellious and aggressive sailor, they elope to a criminal haven in the Bahamas, where she first tastes life outside civilized society.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Mary is disguised as a boy from an early age by her neglectful and loose mother. She must survive in any way she can find and serves as a footboy, a powder monkey, a soldier, and even a wife. As her limited luck runs out, she tries to escape her destiny by hiding away in the belly of a merchant ship bound for the Caribbean.

These narratives collide onboard Calico Jack Rackham’s ship, where their immediate bond threatens to disrupt the entire ship’s regime and ultimately endanger them all. Worse yet, authorities wait for the prime opportunity to strike them down.

Bonny Boy is historical literary fiction that boasts diverse representation and a thoughtful interpretation of the limited and often contradictory information about these women and their time. Know before reading that Bonny Boy contains bloodshed, abuse and mistreatment, sexual situations and innuendos, death and disfigurement, war, swearing, and other material that some readers will find unpleasant. It is also valuable to know, however, that this is a story of love, loss, endurance, feminine strength, motherhood, and growth, and the “rougher” material is not only accurate to the setting of our story and our characters, but also relevant to these themes.
