Synopsis

For novices to learn every aspect of deer hunting in one small volume.
This book was written by a grandfather for his grandchildren, to help them know how to hunt (or just walk in the forest) when they are ready to take it up. He describes where deer live and what they eat. He tells the reader how to find deer, track them, shoot them, clean them, get them to their vehicle, and how to process them.
He tells novices how to make their way into and out of any woods without being lost. He tells how to use a compass; how to draw a map in the dirt; and how to stay out overnight if you must.
He explains how to construct a blind in the woods that is legal and effective. He explains the most effective way to use bait where it is legal, but he also reveals how to walk up on deer in the forest. He describes the various sounds that deer make, and what they mean, so that the hunter may mimic them and call deer to himself.
He gives a list of items that must be in every hunter's knapsack.
This book is small and light, so that it may be taken into the woods to be used as a field guide as the hunter does things he has never done before, such as gutting a deer, or dragging a deer.
The author has filled the book with short vignettes from his hunting experiences that illustrate his points, keeping the book relevant to actually learning to hunt.
He has also included a short section of deer hunting stories from his grandfather, who hunted the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1920's.
The final section of the book is meant to help the young hunter keep hunting in its proper perspective; a hobby, fun, taking our minds off of our problems, but not worth sacrificing our family or values for. The author is a pastor and a Christian, and the book concludes with the way for people who are lost in tangled forests of sin to find their way to God and safety.
