‘Luke the Interpreter: of Jesus’ Story and of Israel’s Scriptures’ (Interpreter) is a post-doctoral monograph arguing for the narrative-theological coherence of Luke’s text (NA), on which I wrote my PhD thesis (SNTSMS 87). Intended primarily for established Lukan scholars and for post-graduate students of Luke-Acts, it also contributes to study of: first-century Jewish-Christian relations; intertextuality and interpretation-theory; and of method in New Testament studies, and Christian Origins.

Interpreter is a closely argued defence of Luke-Acts’ theological-narrative coherence. If Luke did not ‘mean’ what he appears to say then his narrative is rendered incoherent. Focused on the elements within two disputed Jesus-logia (Luke 24:25-27 and 44-49), this book argues, contra his critics’ doubts, that these verses are rooted in Luke’s Prologue; represent the core of ‘his’ apostolic preaching; and arguably represent what Luke intended his two-volume narrative (διήγησις) to achieve – that the Messiah’s suffering and being raised from the dead are the fulfilment of Israel’s scriptures.
