Synopsis

Who decides what makes us human?

Jay is 13 but has never had a birthday. In a future divided Britain, he lives in an experimental centre where he is paraded before visiting investors.

His companions are a batch of failed clone children, a rebellious medical assistant, and Dag, who reveals what really happens ‘downstairs’ where ‘Kindling Bags’ produce more children and failures are disposed of.

When a new fundamentalist government is elected, first the animals and then the children begin to disappear. Jay finds himself washed up on the mainland with a cloned dog and a genetically modified tomato plant. Chased by The Company, who want him alive and the Government, who want him dead, he is an innocent in a new world. He has only the word London to guide him as he tries to reach safety before time or his pursuers catch up with him.
