'Under an Iron Sky; The Third Cheyenne Trilogy' continues the story of See the Dark, a young and flawed one-eyed warrior of the Suhtai band of the Cheyenne. My first and second books (Between the Rivers and Only the Earth Shall Last) told of his early struggles to help himself and his tribal family through times of hunger, battle and threats from ever-encroaching white soldiers and settlers. This third novel develops his relationships with Viajero, a White Mountain Apache war companion, the leader of a female warrior society and two itinerant white men staying with the Suhtai. The book covers the end of the Civil War, its impact on the Plains tribes as technology helped more whites to move west and the gradually tightening noose of government control over Indian lands and lives. Like many of their tribal neighbours, the Cheyenne feel pushed into a corner and won't lie back and just surrender - this book deals with how they retaliated and what happened in the ensuing conflicts from Sand Creek to the Washita, interwoven with my own storylines.
See the Dark is a courageous but impetuous, often immature, warrior with a leavening of experience given by Viajero; together they make a fierce combination in battle. Family life, however, is less clear cut to both of them and they must meet the challenges. A wolf skinner and an English cavalryman in the Suhtai camp add a different dimension of unspoken loyalties and suspect actions. The women, members of their own warrior society, are brave, resourceful but resentful of traditions keeping them back - they too have their flaws. The real-life erosion of Nineteenth century Cheyenne ways is reflected in the narrative. However, this story will not end here - look out for more!
