“Are you a saint?” asked the host of Match Game 78, forty-five years ago. “No? I don’t think so,” answered Madolyn LaMonica, a contestant that day. Madolyn did not view herself as a saint.

In her life, the more Madolyn lived, the more people she touched, blessed and loved. Her constant suffering and frail health — and near total reluctance to speak of her poor health — provided a shining example for those who knew her. In the last three years of her life, the continued weakening of her heart, as the prognosis for her long-term recovery grew dimmer and dimmer, it became clear to see why her friend, Carmelite Sister Mary Scholastica, said, “Madolyn’s normal was heroic.”

What makes anyone a saint is the ordinary charged with the extraordinary, the natural with the supernatural. The ordinariness of Madolyn’s everyday life is the stuff of sanctification, as Jesus described in Matthew's gospel (25:31-46): We will be judged on how we loved.
