Silvanus Phillips Thompson (1851–1916) was a British physicist and electrical engineer. He was a professor at the City and Guilds of London Technical College and later at the Royal College of Science.
In this book, first published in 1910, Thompson aimed to present the principles of calculus in a simplified and humorous manner, making it more approachable for students and readers who might find traditional textbooks daunting. The book has been praised for its clarity, simplicity, and engaging style, and it has remained popular for its unique approach to teaching calculus.
"Being myself a remarkably stupid fellow, I have had to unteach myself the difficulties, and now beg to present to my fellow fools the parts that are not hard. Master these thoroughly, and the rest will follow. What one fool can do, another can."
- Prof. Silvanus P. Thompson
