Synopsis

Once a year, since Liberia’s Independence in 1847, one citizen, drawn from the ranks of the people, is bestowed the honor of being the National Orator. This tradition has continued almost uninterrupted, except during the war years.

Over the years, the speakers have included traditional leaders, youths, market women, etc. The widening of the pool to include ‘everyday Liberians’ has proven to be something most welcome.

The oration is the one time the entire nation gathers to listen to one of their ranks (the people) render views, and offer suggestions and advice to the government, the citizens, and residents. Tradition has it that the orator is not a current member of the governing administration, but in recent times, this has been broken.

In this volume, there are eleven orations, but only ten with texts. The one with missing text was delivered orally, in a local language, hence, no script is available.
