The letters in this book were written by Albert Whitney Wallach to his mother and father while he was a Marine serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He graduated from high school early and enlisted in the Marine Corps with his parents’ permission to serve during the National Emergency. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father and uncle who had served in WWI. He believed that serving was an honor, and he wanted to help his country win the war.
He began writing in 1944 on his way to Boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina and continued as he transitioned to an island in the Pacific, landed on Okinawa, and then served in China after the war ended. The letters show the heart and mind of a young man transitioning into adulthood while fighting a war. He experienced friendship, curiosity, wonder, sadness, and uncertainty. His last correspondence announced his return home in 1946.
