Synopsis

The Confederate Conscription Act of 1862 was met with spontaneous outrage and resentment in Texas during the Civil War. For the small farmers forced into service, it was very much a rich man's war and a poor man's fight. This book explores the Texas Troubles that preceded secession and conscription, and follows the journey of A.B. Forbes, conscripted from Ellis County, and his service with eccentric physician and diplomat turned soldier Ashbel Smith and the Second Texas Infantry, from Camp Ford in Texas to Fort Pemberton and Vicksburg in Mississippi, his walk home after capture and parole, reunification with the regiment on the Texas Gulf Coast after being exchanged, and his continued service until the end of the war.
