Synopsis

I married, for my first and only time, later in life than most people. My wife’s children were young adults living on their own when we married. Thus, I never had the opportunity to raise any children. So, when grandchildren came along, it got me thinking about the role of grandparents versus those of a parent. I realized that a grandparent has three primary roles related to their grandchildren: first and foremost, to love and support them, then to mentor and counsel them, and lastly to spoil them.

My wife and I have two grandchildren, Mady and Sam. They grew up a considerable distance from where we lived and worked. As such, we saw them only a limited number of times during a year, typically around holidays or school breaks.

Their parents did a wonderful job raising them.

I came up with an idea as to how I could pass on some practical life lessons to each of our grandchildren, despite our geographical separation from them. Thus, when Mady and Sam reached their mid-teens, I decided to use emails in which I combined the wisdom found in familiar and innocuous quotations from television, movies, literature, and current or historical people, both famous and little known, with my relevant life experience comments, sometimes serious, other times light-hearted or with levity.

I called these emails my Grandpa’s Quote of the Week (GQOTW).

Hence, this book. It is not an autobiography. It is not a biography of the grandkids. It is not a novel or conventional story. Rather, it is a compilation of my GQOTWs.

It is an expression of love.

It is about preparing for adulthood: how to set oneself up for and attain success in life (however one defines that) and how to deal with life’s inevitable setbacks and obstacles, or as I like to call them, opportunities.
