Synopsis

THE INNOCENT MRS. DUFF: Jacob Duff is an upstanding and well-respected member of the community. But no one could guess at what he had to put up with. He remarried a younger woman because he thought she was fun to be with. But Reggie isn’t fun anymore. She is nothing but an annoyance, never taking his feelings into consideration. She’s even turned his young son against him. Is it any wonder that Jacob has to have a drink now and then? Thank goodness for Aunt Lou. She understands. Perhaps all too well. Of course, she doesn’t approve of his drinking. None of them do. Which is why Jacob finds himself increasingly having to hide his bottles. And if their prying wasn’t bad enough, he now suspects his insolent chauffeur of carrying on with his wife. It’s a good thing he isn’t the kind of man capable of committing murder… THE STRANGER IN THE CAR: Carroll Charleroy’s wife Helen is away at the hospital with the flu, and he sees it as his duty to take care of the family in her absence. However, his daughter Julia comes home drugged and with a black eye, and their live-in guest, Miss Ewing, immediately takes charge. Now it looks like a blackmailer could be involved. Charleroy tries to do the right thing, but when a murder victim is discovered, he begins to realize he has no idea what is going on.

Born in Brooklyn on June 18, 1889, Elisabeth Sanxay knew she wanted to be a writer by the time she was six. At sixteen she completed her first story. Self-taught as a writer, she developed her style by translating English into other languages, then translating other languages into English. Holding published 25 novels in her lifetime—18 of them mysteries—and a wide variety of short stories. She married British diplomat George E. Holding in 1913 and together with their two daughters they traveled widely in South America and the Caribbean before settling in Bermuda for a number of years. Holding died at age 65 in the Bronx borough of New York City on February 7, 1955.
