Henry Shoemaker collected the details of the bison he believed were native to Pennsylvania in the early days, including his imagined Bison americanus Pennsylvanicus, a smaller wood bison that lived among the forests of the Keystone State. Included are anecdotes and details from the experts on the subject in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most entertaining, however, are the tales and descriptions of the various legendary hunters of the region, who hunted and shot them. This newly edited and indexed edition includes a foreword by Lawrence Knorr and numerous new annotations detailing and supporting or refuting the claims made by Shoemaker. Details about the men mentioned by Shoemaker are also provided, when they could be found. Readers of this new edition will now be entertained by Shoemaker's stories and be able to locate and visit the graves of those brave men who trekked through the endless mountains and river valleys of Pennsylvania.

Born into wealth and raised in New York City, Henry Shoemaker (1880-1958) spent his summers at the family estate in McElhattan, PA, and there fell in love with the state's mountains and people. During a long and varied career, Shoemaker wrote hundreds of articles and books on the disappearing Pennsylvania wilderness and its people and culture. A founder of the Pennsylvania Folklore Society, he also served as the Commonwealth's first state folklorist from 1946 to 1958.
Lawrence Knorr has authored or co-authored over 30 books, mostly on history or biography. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), the Sons of the American Revolution, and numerous other historical organizations. He enjoys most writing about the formerly famous and his beloved Pennsylvania Dutch culture. He is a lifetime Penn State alum and holds a Ph.D. in History from Liberty University.
