There is no royal road to happiness. My life has taught me that joy is not something we inherit, purchase, or reach without struggle. It is something we learn to recognize through hardship, faith, love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the courage to keep moving forward.
In There's No Royal Road to Happiness, I share the story of my life from my childhood in Panganiban, Catanduanes, Philippines, through the uncertainty of the Second World War and into the many chapters that followed. I was born into a humble family and grew up surrounded by poverty, war, hard work, and the strength of a close-knit community. Those early years taught me resilience, gratitude, respect for family, and the value of education. From farm life and delayed schooling, I continued pursuing my dreams, eventually earning opportunities that carried me far beyond the small town where my journey began.
My path later brought me to the United States, where I faced the challenges of building a new life, pursuing a career, finding love, raising a family, and confronting losses I never imagined I would endure. Marriage, separation, the painful distance from my children, depression, betrayal, financial pressures, and the struggle to begin again tested me deeply. Yet every setback became another lesson in what it means to survive without surrendering hope.
Some of the most difficult moments came when serious illness entered my family. Watching my wife endure major medical crises, surgeries, uncertainty, and a long recovery forced me to confront fear, helplessness, responsibility, and faith in ways I had never known before. Through these experiences, I learned that we are never meant to walk life's hardest roads alone. Family, friends, compassion, prayer, and the kindness of others can become the light that guides us through darkness.
This memoir is not the story of a perfect life. It is the story of a life repeatedly tested and repeatedly rebuilt. It is about leaving home without forgetting where you came from, loving through disappointment, forgiving when forgiveness is difficult, finding strength after loss, and discovering that happiness is not a destination reached by an easy road.
I share these memories in the hope that readers facing their own struggles will remember that hardship does not have to define the end of their story. There may be no royal road to happiness, but with courage, perseverance, love, faith, and hope, there is always a way forward.
