Hilton Everett Moore is a published short story author who lives and writes at his remote cabin in the near wilderness of Baraga County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He has held many positions in his life including: a stint as a kennel man for a Humane Society, a factory worker, later as a certified pipe welder in the oil fields of West Texas, also as an assistant manager of a lumber company. Ironically in a chapter he would like to forget, a gut-wrenching failed attempt at owning a restaurant. After a midlife crisis he went back to collegeand received a Master's Degree in Social Work. Upon graduation he was employed in the Michigan prison system as a Clinical SocialWorker. Presently he enjoys writing in his cabin in the wilderness. He likes to fish with worms.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Moore has done it again in this compelling third volume, Thirteen Miles North of Nelson, where both the simplicity and complexity of life in the far reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula push the reader beyond the rugged geography where extremes are more than metaphorical. In these eleven short stories, the reader is often brought to tears of triumph and waves of hilarious laughter as his characters plunge through the wilderness of emotions rarely exposed in conventional literature. This collection breaks many barriers that would frighten many novice writers. If Moore thinks it, he writes it. The word daunting doesn't seem to be in his vocabulary. These stories have been called parables with a purpose, although that purpose at times seems licentious. A good read for the adult mind. "Michigan's Upper Peninsula breeds a particularly gifted group of writers. One of these is Hilton Everett Moore, who lives in a remote corner of the wilderness where he quietly writes. In Moore's latest collection of short stories, he transports us, again, to the mythical village of Nelson. From page one, we have no doubt that this collection constitutes a treasure, its characters so odd and endearing that they step off the page and make a place in our hearts." -- Sue Harrison, author of The Midwife's Touch"As someone born and raised in Upper Michigan, the characters that Hilton Everett Moore writes about in Thirteen Miles North of Nelson, Volume III are familiar to me. They walk the walk of people's lives in the remote, rugged Upper Peninsula. Moore's stories ring true and are told with empathetic realism, specific to the UP, yet also a microcosm of life for working-class Americans." --Rick Gould, classic film blogger".I would recommend North of Nelson to anyone who appreciates the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and how the land carves out the psyche of its denizens to the same degree that they try to conquer nature itself. The setting and landscape of Hilton Everett Moore's universe in these books will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has lived in or loved the region." -- Victor R. "North of Nelson should be read slowly, savoring the quirky characters, the poetry of the words, the odd, fierce stories. Hilton Everett Moore is far more than a regional writer. His words and stories place him in high literary circles indeed. So many of his phrases or sentences elicited a bit of envy, as in 'I wish I would have written that!' Beautifully illustrated throughout! A treat for the eyes, the mind, the imagination." -- Sue Harrison, author of The Midwife's Touch"Hilton Everett Moore's writings provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of North of Nelson residents. They reveal the physical and emotional struggles of living in the rugged wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In the final short story, Moore's character states, Tonight I was witness to the undressing of a human soul. The author beautifully and lovingly exposes an individual's conflicts in searching for meaning in their lives. As with Volume I, North of Nelson III is a great read."
