With a foreword by Olympic medalist Jim Bregman, Judo Poems is more than a book of verse. Each poem captures a technical truth wrapped in rhythm and wit—like this one, which turns the science of timing and surprise into art:

A USEFUL JERK

Essential to a throw is the element of surprise,
When seeking the ultimate ippon prize.
As the beginning of the throw is the most tricky part,
What better place for a surprise than at the start!

Throwing forces at the beginning are weak,
And defending forces will naturally seek.
So where the attack is weak and the defense is strong,
A surprise is needed to make the defense go wrong.

A useful method for creating a surprise,
To help gain the elusive ippon prize,
Is a distracting useful jerk,
Applied just before the throw does its work.

The verb to jerk, as defined in the dictionary,
Can be applied while moving or when stationary,
Is a short, sharp, sudden motion,
Assisting a throw with its sought after promotion.

Although the action of a jerk is small,
It can add tremendous consequences in producing a fall.
Its surprise makes all the difference in the world,
As truth becomes apparent as a throw is unfurled.

Besides surprise, a jerk does more,
It’s the crack that begins to open the door.
By applying a short, sharp, jerk,
Forces are set in motion that help the throw work.

The reason for applying a short, sharp, jerk,
Is, it’s a great assistance in making a throw work,
As it causes the defender to uncontrollably react,
Thus producing an attack that has more impact.

Using forces produced by the defending reaction,
Is a proven method that gives a throw added action.
By synchronizing with, and in the reacting direction,
Extra impetus is added to the throwing calculation.
