Round the Way is a coming-of-age story about a white boy growing up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the 1970s. Life on the street is no easy task when you’re the outsider trying to fit in. Peter felt like a lost soul, out of place in a world where being different, presenting daily challenges. Adults in his life were trying to figure out their own lives. He lived in fear every day, and he had good reason to. He had to figure out his life on his own. The streets were tough, nowhere felt safe. All he wanted was to feel safe; fit in with everyone else. He tried to fit in, but the streets did not fit him. I’m not going to tell you a story about an underprivileged kid who grew up fighting against all odds and becomes a great professional of some sort. No, this is a story of survival. This is a story about a kid who grew up idealizing guys in the neighborhood who had a car. A kid who survived every day to make it to the next. That was the accomplishment. I would never expect much more than that. This is my story, what happened to me. All I can do is tell my story.
