9798906434890: Why Saving and Investing Doesn't Work for India's Middle Class: What They Never Told You About Your Money

Synopsis

In 1947 1 US dollar bought 3.3 rupees. Today it buys over 90.I pulled 20 years of RBI data to find out where the money went. The Sensex grew at 13.8% a year from 2004 to 2024. India's M3 money supply grew at 12.2% over the same 20 years. Real GDP grew at 6.5%. So roughly 4 out of every 10 rupees your SIP dashboard calls a return is not wealth creation, it is the rupee getting smaller.Official inflation says 5-6%. Healthcare runs at 10-14% and private school fees at 8-12%. At the 10-12% you actually face, your purchasing power halves every 6-7 years, which means a crore saved today buys about 3 to 6 lakhs worth by the time you retire.Your FD pays 7%, and after tax that is 4.9%, so the safest product you own loses purchasing power every year you hold it. Gold returned 13-14% a year over the same period and beat the Sensex even after tax. I think it is worth noticing that the 1 asset nobody could print is the 1 asset that worked. The book covers why money stopped being backed by anything in 1971, what CPI leaves out, the M3 versus Sensex analysis tested across 252 months of RBI data, and Bitcoin as the logical next step with the honest case against it.I am not going to tell you what to buy. But you are already making a bet. Holding rupees is a bet that the rupee holds. Not financial advice. The author is not registered with SEBI or any regulatory body.
