Facsimile of the 1922 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Bedford and Oolitic, Indiana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the Lawrence County seat of 12,000 people in the Indiana limestone country, from the Court House square and the stores, hotels and opera house round it, out along the Monon, Milwaukee and Baltimore & Ohio South Western railroads to the cut-stone mills, quarries and railroad shops, the residential streets of East and West Bedford, the United States Cement works, and the quarry town of Oolitic four miles north-west.
The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices round the Court House square and along Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, I, J and K Streets - the Lawrence County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Carnegie Public Library, the Post Office, the Fire Department main station, the Stone City Opera House, the Elks' and Eagles' homes, the Democrat and Daily Mail offices, the Greystone Inn, the New Bedford Hotel, the Hotel Stickles, the Stone City Hotel and the Central House - through the Baltimore & Ohio South Western depot, the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville depots and round house, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul passenger depot and shops, the cut-stone mills of the Bedford Cut Stone, Hoosier Cut Stone, Interstate Cut Stone, Brooks, Falt, Furst-Kerber, Rowe, Struble and McMillian companies, the Ingalls Stone Company's McLaren mill and Mill No. 3, the Imperial Stone Company's Blue Hole Quarry, the Salem Mill of the Indiana Quarries Company, the United States Cement Company, the Bedford Foundry and Machine Company, the Bedford Tractor Company's machine shop, the Reliance shirt factory, the Lemon Milling Company, the Home Artificial Ice Company, the bottling works, the lumber yards and saw mills, the Bedford Electric Light, Heat & Power Company and the city pumping station, to the Dunn Memorial Hospital, the high schools, the North Side and East Side schools, St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church and parish school, St. John's Episcopal Church, the First Baptist, First Christian, Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian, German Methodist and A. M. E. churches, Green Hill and Beech Grove cemeteries, and the residential streets of the Original Town, East Bedford, West Bedford, Foote's Highlands and Avondale - and, four miles out, the town of Oolitic with its post office, church and school, the Ingalls mill, the Indiana Quarries Company and the Consolidated Stone Company's Dark Hollow mill and quarry.
In May 1922 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Bedford and Oolitic for the fire-insurance trade, drawing them at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the Court House square to the cut-stone mills, quarries and railroad shops, the United States Cement works and the quarry town of Oolitic, printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Bedford address back to 1922.

The Sanborn Map Company of New York, founded by D. A. Sanborn in 1867 and by the 1900s headquartered at 11 Broadway, surveyed thousands of American cities for the fire-insurance trade. Its large-scale plans record every building's footprint, construction, height and use, and remain the most detailed record of the early twentieth-century American city.
