The greatest port in north-western Europe was captured intact on 4 September 1944. The first Allied cargo ship did not unload there until 28 November — eighty-five days later. Those eighty-five days are why the war did not end in 1944.
The western campaign of 1944 was decided by logistics twice, in opposite directions. Before D-Day, the Allies solved a supply problem no one in the history of war had ever solved: they built two artificial harbours and towed them across the Channel, laid a fuel pipeline under the sea, and wrecked the French railways so thoroughly that the defender could not reinforce faster than the attacker could unload. That is why the landing held. Then, in the last week of August, the same armies drove past the end of their own supply line and failed an easier version of the identical problem — leaving Antwerp captured but useless while the pursuit stopped, not against a German line, but against arithmetic. The pause that followed is the reason there was a Hürtgen Forest, a winter campaign, and a German offensive in the Ardennes.
D-Day is one chapter of fourteen here, because that is roughly its share of the campaign. The fighting that followed it — where the great majority of the campaign’s dead were killed — gets the space it has rarely been given: Normandy as an attrition battle whose infantry loss rates matched, and in places exceeded, the Western Front of 1916–18. And because this campaign produced the largest self-justifying memoir literature of the war, the book states one evidentiary rule up front and applies it everywhere: contemporary orders and signals first, war diaries second, postwar memoirs treated as evidence about their authors rather than about the events. Caen, Falaise, Arnhem and the broad-front decision are all judged by that rule — not by nationality.

This book is for you if:
Volume 8 of The Second World War Chronicles — and, by design, a place a new reader can begin. The port that works and the water that does not: start there, and 1944 makes sense.
