Synopsis

A brother's dream. A sister's fate. A community at the crossroads.

When Kambi wakes from a terrifying dream, he sees his sister Maje bleeding in white cloth while the village dances. He knows he cannot ignore it. Seven years after leaving Sierra Leone for Philadelphia, he returns to Mambo to find Maje gone, taken into the Bondo Bush for initiation. But the deeper he fights to reach his sister before the blade touches her, the more he discovers that some truths are guarded by silence.

Set between Sierra Leone and South Philadelphia, Where the Lilies Bleed follows Kambi as he confronts not only the powerful Sowei women who guard the ceremony, but his own parents, his elders, and the community that raised him. Carrying warnings from his uncle Borbor Miller, a man whose own marriage to a Mambo girl ended in heartbreak and exile, and a strange prophecy from Pa Tasso, an old man he meets by the bridge, Kambi must decide how far he is willing to go to save his sister.

But when he stands before the Bantaba, the village council, he discovers that the most powerful voice in the room belongs not to him, but to a young woman named Toma, who speaks a truth no one expected to hear.

"From the first line we are drawn into the story. Everything else is so grounded in our culture and Sierra Leonean sensibility."
— Janice Williams

"Perhaps most impressive... is the critical work that it does of highlighting the profound effects that FGM has on the community and the individual. This is good work. Bravo."
— Charmaine Denison-George, Managing Editor, Poda-Poda Stories
