Synopsis

Every big city has the same daily ritual. Millions of people climb into cars, buses and auto-rickshaws, and then they wait. They wait at signals, on flyovers, in tunnels and on highways that were supposed to fix the traffic and didn't. I have spent much of my working life around aircraft. So, like many people who have looked down on a city from the air, I've often wondered the same thing: why are we all stuck on the ground when there's so much empty sky above us?

This book is my answer to that question, or at least my best attempt at one.

The Sky Commute grew out of several years of research into Urban Air Mobility: the idea of using small, quiet, electric aircraft to move people around and between cities. During my doctoral work, I surveyed 294 people in India: whether they would ever ride in a flying taxi, and why. The strongest answer wasn't excitement, status, or love of gadgets. It was something much simpler: TIME.

People want their lives back. That research also became a detailed academic book on public acceptance, innovation ecosystems, vertiport infrastructure and dual-use strategy. I wrote it for researchers, planners, and policymakers. But the more I worked on it, the more I felt that the people who most need to understand this revolution are not reading academic books. They're the people who will live with it: students, young professionals and the generation that will ride these aircraft, build them, regulate them and decide what kind of cities they create.
