Writing poetry, according to Margaret Atwood, is like dipping a thread into a supersaturated solution to make crystals, not solving a problem but alchemizing “a cluster of words” into visible shape. The poetry in this collection performs that transformation: Rather than resolving loss, Martha Fox holds grief and absence and exploding boulders under the light, turning them this way and that, up close and at a distance.
Her work does not shy away from difficulty. We linger in the unbearable just long enough to imagine that it can be borne. Into the diffuse grief of watching a familiar world become unfamiliar, Fox weaves moments warmed by moss and orange zest and Flower-moon petals.
The poet knows when to reach and when to pull back. A line may rise into lyricism before landing, without warning, in the quotidian: a sticking kitchen drawer, lost sunglasses, bunions. That collision is the point. Beauty and plainness are not opposites. Resilience is not triumph. Love is where everything begins and ends.
