The Road Not Planned
Hello. My name is Crystal Shuff, and I've known Abigail Bennett since before we were in kindergarten. Please, have a seat by the pool. I can have Daphne bring a snack if you want. I'm watching the place while my friend is out of town.
Of course, you probably know her by another name.
Julia Barnett.
Yes, that Julia Barnett. Hollywood actress, award-winning star, and a woman whose face has appeared on more movie posters than I could possibly count. She's built an extraordinary career, and I've been proud to watch her succeed. But there's a rather interesting story behind her latest film, and it has very little to do with Hollywood.
You see, when you've known someone practically your entire life, you notice things other people don't. The little changes in their voice. The smiles that don't quite reach their eyes. The difference between someone who's genuinely happy and someone who's simply become very good at looking that way.
I'd begun noticing those things about Abigail.
Now, you know she went to Ohio to scout locations for her last movie. But I'm one of the few people who know what really happened.
She was heading to a location when a flat tire left her stranded on a country highway. Fortunately, a carpenter named Joe Harper happened along and stopped to help. Unfortunately, her spare wasn't much better than the original, so her carefully planned business trip took an unexpected detour through a little town called Tiffin, Ohio.
Joe isn't exactly the sort of man Abigail usually encounters. He drives a pickup, works with his hands, and seems perfectly content with his life. He even recognized Julia Barnett, but didn't ask for an autograph or make a fuss.
He simply called her Abigail.
Now, I could tell you quite a bit about what happened after that. Abigail and I have had some rather long conversations about Tiffin, and I suspect I know more about Joe Harper than the man would be comfortable knowing.
But I think I'll let you discover those things for yourself.
Oh, thank you, Daphne. Just set the iced tea here, please.
Now, where was I?
Ah, yes. There's something I've learned from watching Abigail over the years. Hollywood can give a person almost everything they've ever dreamed of, but it can't necessarily tell them what to do when something unexpected comes along.
And Joe Harper was certainly unexpected.
What happens when a Hollywood actress with a carefully planned future meets a small-town carpenter who has no particular interest in Hollywood? Especially when neither of them has any intention of changing the life they've built?
Well, that's where the story gets interesting. Especially when you hear about some of the antics that went on. Especially with Sam Watkins. He was the first assistant director on the film, and believe me, when he got involved...
Oh, dear. I'm afraid I've already told you more than I intended.
Thank you for keeping me company. You're welcome to visit again sometime. Perhaps next time I'll tell you about the Abigail Bennett I knew long before the world discovered Julia Barnett.

Two different worlds. Two unexpected hearts. One road neither knew they were meant to travel.
