Synopsis

Manzanar: A History Brief is the booklet version of the ground-breaking Manzanar Historic Record Wall Calendar first published for the year 2026. (An updated 2027 version will be available in the fall.) The booklet contains the same innovative, captioned photo colláges of historic WWII-era photographs, as well as the same narrative describing the round-up and incarceration of Japanese Americans from the United States’ West Coast “Exclusion Area.”

In addition to the Prologue and Epilogue that bookend this historic tragedy, a dozen concise chapters illustrate life inside Manzanar’s barbed wire enclosure. Topics range from occupational and recreational activities within the camp to home-grown educational and medical infrastructure, as well as the efforts of photographers to document — and even mislead the public about — conditions there.

Manzanar: A History Brief is expected to be the first in a continuing series of booklets, each of which will concisely summarize a significant era or chapter in our history — including those some people with vested interests would prefer we forget. In today’s Wikipedia world where truth and context are crucial but readers demand the “condensed version,” our Briefs will deliver the important, unvarnished highlights. Among other subjects, future Briefs will recount the stories of Native Americans as Europeans swept across their homeland, the horror of Africans stolen from their homelands and efforts to overcome the ongoing legacy of slavery, as well as the subjugation of women through time and across cultures, and the more recent movements toward gender equality.
