Synopsis

Stuck at home during the COVID-19 outbreak, watercolor artist Lila Bartel and poet Duane Johnson began sending their artistic expressions back and forth via e-mail. The two Kansans responded to each other's work as the spirit moved, and the result is this collaboration of illustrations and verse.

Some of the twenty-eight pairings in this book matched existing poems with existing art, some are poems Johnson wrote to accompany his favorite Bartel watercolors, and some are paintings Bartel created to accompany poems previiously written by Johnson.

À propos des auteurs

Duane Johnson is a retired journalist, who now primarily writes poetry. He has published one volume of poetry, "Evolution's Promise," and is working on two other volumes of poetry. He also has published a novel, "Herald of the Resurrection."Johnson lives in Topeka, Kan., and is married to a retired social worker. They have two grown children. He lives in a modest house with gray siding on a dead-end street with a chain saw, fishing gear and kayak in the garage. The near-by four hundred- acre lake is his laboratory.

Lila Bartel is a retired gifted studies teacher, who feeling a need for a new passion, began drawing and painting when her older child went off to college. She explored different techniques while studying with talented local and national artists. Portraits have become her favorite subject, especially children."My purpose is to start a new genre, Expressionism. If Impressionism started with Monet's impressionist 'Sunrise, ' Expressionism can start inTopeka, Kansas."Bartel draws a distinction between her Expressionism and the Abstract Expressionism popular in the 1950s."(My style) is strengthened with abstractions and exaggerations and sensations, while holding out a very realistic world. We baby boomers have lived idealism, and now we have met with reality."
