In 1955, Anna Margaret Preston was just ten years-old. The intelligent and curious daughter of a U.S. Naval officer, she lived with her mother and brother in San Francisco while her father was at sea. Traveling and moving since her birth, Anna is thrilled when her family relocates to Japan. While living there, she's exposed to cultural and historical lessons she could not have possibly learned in a textbook or school classroom in the U.S. Later on, Anna’s family moves to an isolated island where she must absorb a new set of life lessons that deepen her values and sense of morality. Through a wide range of both touching and tragically sad experiences, Anna’s teen years open her eyes and heart, molding her into the woman she became. Anna’s story reveals the fabric of life for military families with its collection of rewards, demands, and sacrifices. At its heart, Anna offers readers a love story, as relevant today as it was when it unfolded for her decades ago.
