Synopsis

Rosie's new job is to guard her fellow farm animals - cows, goats, geese and chickens - who have never seen a donkey before. On her first day, they dismiss her when she tries to fit in with each flock. Rosie wonders if she'll ever fit in. That night, she defends them against a hungry pack of coyotes. She becomes their hero and their friend, and Rosie feels at home on the farm.

Rosie, One of a Kind is picture book written and illustrated for young readers, ages 3-6, to learn more about the relationships between different farm animals and how they interact in nature.

On home territory, donkeys guard against dog-like intruders, so Rosie defends the farm animals against coyotes in this story. Donkeys warn herd animals with a loud bray that carries for almost two miles, and they sleep for only three hours. This makes them perfect guard animals.

What's more, donkeys are steady, smart, and playful, so they make good friends for all kinds of kids!

Gwinn Ward has created naturalistic illustrations for the last 12 years. She was a self-employed graphic designer and studied scientific and botanical illustration. Her diverse projects have included an international artwork exchange between high schools, and supervising an elementary school art program in the Chicago public schools. She is currently involved in illustrating additional children's books as well as writing and illustrating her own historical fiction novel.
