Synopsis

Heather Dorn's first full-length collection from Roadside Press.

In How To Play House, Heather Dorn invites readers on a journey through the complexities of life. With language that is both poetic and biting, Dorn explores the opposing forces that shape our relationships and surroundings. From the chemical reactions that drive our emotions to the boundaries we create in our own homes, Dorn's poetry offers a unique and provocative perspective on the world around us. With its mix of beauty and grit, How To Play House is a must-read for anyone looking to be challenged and inspired by contemporary poetry.

Heather Dorn’s How To Play House is a work of sorcery, transmuting a snarl of dark threads to a colorful skein. This sleight-of-hand is evidenced by the warp and the woof of her chosen word-jewels and the sharp teeth of her sentences. Without voices like hers, we wouldn’t get poems like “What the Chemicals Want” or lines like “Bed frames become boundaries too” that challenge and refresh in a single blow. Take a walk inside her life. Let her tell you about the world of opposites leaning against each other.

"Women have always been resourceful." Those five words from How To Play House nail it. Last night I was reading a favorite book I've returned to again and again, Women Who Run With The Wolves. I guess I'm basic like that. I wrote notes in my meditation/manifestation/astrological transit journal. "Obscene" is from old Hebrew. Ob means a wizard or sorceress. Heather Dorn is a sorceress. She takes the dense material of her life and makes motherfucking magic in this collection. --Misti Rainwater-Lites
