As a teenager, I kept journals. Unfortunately, those were lost long ago in a family move. In 1974, I reconnected with the joy of journaling and became a serious journal writer, having filled over 380 journals since then. Once I decided not to bequeath my journals to anyone, I devised an alternative plan—a legacy journal project. I sorted through thousands and thousands of pages and found meaningful excerpts to share with others. Somewhere along the way, this morphed into Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. 1. and Vol. ll. When I began, I chose seventy relevant topics, eventually narrowing it down to twenty-two. The chapters in this book are My Legacy Journaling Project, In Relationship, News Events Through the Years, Death and Dying, Loads of Lists, Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, Part 2, Those Who Were There, Looking Ahead, Room 732 in the Hollywood Beach Hotel, and Living and Leaving Your Legacy®. Also included are legacy projects, including a guide to writing an ethical will.
Initially, each subject was roughly 75-450 pages and was taken from journals dated between 1974-2016. After careful editing, I have chosen excerpts that best capture my thoughts, feelings, conversations, encounters, memories, dreams, travel adventures, and more. I hope that sharing some of my life lessons, values, beliefs, hopes, and dreams in this book will prove valuable to others. Besides the journal entries in Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. ll, the book also has reflections after each chapter. These reflections are based on thoughts, feelings, and memories that surfaced from reading these excerpts. Following my reflections are journal prompts on each subject and blank pages on which one may write, should they be inspired by the prompts or something they've read in the chapter.

For many years, she has volunteered at a camp for children who experienced the death of a family member—helping them gain important tools, including journaling, to cope with their grief. Merle also conducts an all-day parent session at these camps. In addition, Merle facilitates a writing for wellness group at Gilda’s Club for women impacted by cancer. She is also currently involved in Wisdom of the Century, a project that interviews individuals ninety years old and older.

She is a council member of the International Association for Journal Writing, is the author of Room 732, a short story collection that pays homage to the historic Hollywood Beach Hotel and a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, and is a contributor to the Huffington Post, Medium, Authority Magazine, Women Writers, Women’s Books, and Thrive Global. As a pioneer in the field of legacy journaling, her chapter on the subject appears in The Great Book of Journaling: How Journal Writing Can Support a Life of Wellness, Creativity, Meaning and Purpose.

I am an educator, speaker, and author. Since 1974, I have amassed a collection of 380 journals. The majority of these journals are the basis for my legacy journal, Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. l, which was released in June 2022. The book is a compilation of excerpts from 359 journals and is divided into eleven topics, including journaling, marriage, parenting, career, spirituality, and more. Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. ll, was released on June 20, 2023. This volume includes chapters on friendship, travel, Holocaust survivors, death and dying, legacy work, and much more. The excerpts in each chapter are followed by journal prompts. My hope is that when reading about my life, the readers will look at their own lives and understand that how we live our life becomes our legacy. Most of my career has been in the field of education, both as a teacher and an administrator. For twenty-six years, I served as the director of educational outreach at the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in South Florida, where I worked closely with hundreds of Holocaust survivors, ensuring that their legacy is perpetuated for this and future generations. After retiring, I created Living and Leaving Your Legacy(R), which focuses on preserving and passing along the essence of one's life. Through classes, workshops, and lectures, I have guided thousands of people in sacred legacy work, writing for wellness, and journaling. I live in Miami, Florida, with my husband of fifty-five years and have two children and two granddaughters.
