Synopsis

This book is the beginning of a new season for me; an awakening of who I am in the world. I am reminded of an encounter in Ocean City, Maryland with a seagull on the beach. The beach is one of my favorite places to relax. A place where I feel I can really be myself. As I sat on the beach ... this seagull was walking along the sand and approached me. It started to squawk at me, as if it was delivering an important message. I was stunned for a moment and replied, “Do I know you?” My feathered companion walked back to its starting point then returned to my space for further conversation, and repeated its squawking. Finally, the seagull left and continued its journey down the beach. The memory of that encounter stayed with me for years. I wondered what the bird was doing and why it included me. Seagulls are traditionally seen as symbols of communication and messengers of changing times and tides. Our experiences in life are often just as mysterious as we move from season to season, never really knowing with certainty how things will change.

I believe relationships are also one of the great mysteries of life. They are unpredictable and the source of life lessons to be learned. Some are nurturing and some are harsh. Some are close and others are distant. Some can be complex, while others are simple ... Relationships reveal our inner selves, those strong and weak characteristics that only God can truly discern. I recently encountered a shocking relationship dilemma when I discovered at age sixty-six, that the father who raised me was not my biological father. ... I’ve always had a feeling that I never fit into my family, but this was unbelievable, especially because it was unexpected. ... Then came the rush of feelings: being overwhelmed, isolated, depressed, withdrawn, angry, and grief-stricken. This barrage of feelings lasted for about six weeks while I “wallowed in the mud, feeling sorry for myself.” Finally, I heard the voice of God in my spirit saying,
“Daughter,
Remember that you belong to me.
I have been with you always and have never forsaken you.
Trust me, this time is no different from the others.
You will know the truth and the truth will make you free. I promise!”
