The literature of Arthur Machen is always an exploration into sacrament and landscape, replete with complex symbology he described as hieroglyphics. Places are haunted or doxified, and so are the characters. There are costs to the events found in each of his narratives, whether it be the dissolution of personhood by submitting to evil, or its glorification through grace. The current volume has been compiled and arranged with the desire to present an expansive survey on the work of Arthur Machen without resorting to the over-anthologized texts found so easily in other collections. This goal of gathering "fresh" material while remaining representative of the writer's long career has hopefully succeeded in illustrating a brilliant arc of depth and wonder. The selected pieces, initially published between 1889 and 1943, have been divided into four categories: Fiction, Essays & Articles, Christian Apologetics and selections from Machen's Memoirs.

Arthur Machen (1863-1947) charted a lonely and curious course through literature. Though never widely known, his work in horror fiction has gained him an appreciation from a small circle of admirers over the years. Yet, as adept as he may have been in creating tales of horror, a careful study of his body of work illustrates there is more to explore and discover about the Welsh writer. At times, one finds a brilliant essayist or a pragmatic journalist, a gifted storyteller of mystery and fantasy, or a Christian apologist. Despite this breadth, Machen worked in an idiosyncratic style and kept doggedly to the theme which concerned him most: ecstasy as the highest purpose of art and that which is most beneficial to Man.
Christopher Tompkins is an independent researcher, lecturer and founder of Darkly Bright Press.
