Sumter M. Carmichael, MD is a retired board-certified psychiatrist living in Birmingham, Alabama with her husband, Steve Coleman. Dr. Carmichael graduated from Stanford University and completed her MD degree at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. Following a medical internship under Dr. Tinsley Harrison in Birmingham, she did research for several years before taking a psychiatric residency. In addition she studied psychotherapy for seven years with a Freudian analyst and later with a Jungian analyst.She developed symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis at age 30, not diagnosed until ten years later. During that time, Dr, Carmichael continued a hospital-based practice as well as conducting individual, family, and group psychotherapy. In addition, she lectured to medical students in sophomore year Pharmacology course for thirteen years and in the junior year Medicine course.In 1990 she added working with indigent medical patients at the local county hospital, also teaching medical students and young doctors about pain, depression, anxiety, addiction and organic mental syndromes.
