The novellas “The Boy Who Built A Rocket Ship” and “The Day It Snowed Forever” are primarily narratives about the loss of childhood innocence. The first is the story of a young boy who worships his older brother as a mechanical genius and wants to help him in his secret revolt against the authoritarian society they are trapped in. However, he gradually learns who his older brother really is, and what the motives for his rebellion really are, and how their mother and father have struggled to include the older boy, despite his past, as part of their family. The second story is about an older boy who, with his younger brother, revels in a strange and increasingly catastrophic weather event — an interminable snowstorm brought on by the vagaries of climate change. With the snow rapidly burying the city they live in, he learns of the evil that adults unfettered from social norms are capable of, and what he must do to defend the lives of his family.
