In 1914, Frederick Waugh, known as the Wizard by his friends, walked into the woods on Monhegan Island, Maine, where he saw elemental spirits or fairies in the gnarled spruce trees. He became captivated by them and spent years working on magical illustrations and a story about a wizard who loses control of the magic. His "Munes," as he called them, traveled from his studio in Montclair, N.J. to Kent, CT, and then finally to Provincetown, MA where they again appear in a fascinating and mystical painting called Conclave. The Clan of Munes was published in 1916, just prior to the start of World War I, it was bad timing for a large and expensive children's book resulting in very few copies sold. As a result, it is a very rare book fetching thousands of dollars today. It has also gained a cult following, with some believing that Waugh actually encountered the "Munes," and has magic that reaches far beyond its pages.
