Described as a Motorcycle Diaries in reverse as three Hippies journey through the Andes to visit a friend in Buenos Aires. The original idea is to visit Felipe Jolly Luque in Buenos Aires. Blind naïveté and magical protection of white Americans, we step off the plane in Quito and are gone, out of reach, six-month, 12,500 miles overland through plastic-free cultures on the eve of globalization.Chilean college students hide from their generals in cheap hotels. Smugglers abandon me in the high Argentine Andes. Night, dead of winter, alone through snowbound passes, I find my way into Chile to be arrested for illegal entry and possession of pot.Freedom Pure Freedom is a fictional version of the trip and a homage to my father who dies weeks after I finish this. I imagine a reverse Peace Corp–he certainly could have originated–by which a Peruvian campasino is sent to the United States.Handwritten, a time capsule, I use a light hand to identify people, reform chapters, grammar and spelling.Meet my younger self, innocence and hope, music and friends, faith in fellow travelers.
