Synopsis

When I was a kid, playing in the forest near my home, I discovered an ancient, twisted redwood. Spotting a hollow at the base, I reached my hand inside and pulled out a tiny black diary. This journal of an early California logger led me to discover the rest of his compelling story: a man who’s love for the redwoods was in direct conflict with his need to support his family, and how he navigated this conflict. Gorgeous, vivid illustrations by Kathy Goetzel bring this story to life. In addition to some early California history and logging practices, children are introduced to the critical role redwoods play in our ecosystem and climate regulation. Learn about how to visit the Sturgeon’s Mill Living History Museum and botanical gardens. A perfect choice for Unit Studies, redwood- themed lesson plans are included for teachers and homeschoolers.
