BERNICE MENNIS has lived in and wandered around the woodlands of the Southern Adirondacks for four decades – drawing and painting, writing poems and essays, giving talks and writing workshops, and teaching writing and literature in Great Meadows Prison (for Skidmore College) and in Vermont College’s Adult Degree Program (for older students returning to college). She has published two books:Breaking Out of Prison: A Guide to Consciousness, Compassion, and Freedom, and Holding It All, a book of poetry. Her continual challenge in her life has been to “hold it all” (all our complex feelings) and to break out of the prisons that confine us all in spaces too small for the richness and depth of our lives. This book, Letters to a Local Newspaper, allows her to reflect on the politics which have engaged her heart and mind for two decades, reread her too many letters to her local newspaper, and chronicle where she and the world have traveled – to ask questions, make observations, draw connections, and think deeply about our inner values, the outside world, about choices we make, and about the world we want to live in and help shape.
