Synopsis

Most youth sports books tell you what the industry is doing to your child. This one tells you the part no one says out loud: some of it is coming from inside your own house.

You swore you'd never be that parent—the one barking from the sidelines, refreshing the rankings, treating a ten-year-old's Saturday like a job interview. And yet here you are: booking the private lessons, absorbing the travel-team costs, lying awake wondering whether you're doing too little or too much.

Walter Beede has watched youth sports from every seat there is—as a college coach reading recruits across his desk, as an advisor at a thousand kitchen tables, and, hardest of all, as a father in the stands. He has seen what happens when love and fear get tangled together, and a parent's anxiety wears the costume of a child's dream.

Beyond the Bleachers is the honest conversation that showcases rankings and travel-team flyers that will never start. Because the uncomfortable truth is this: when fear is driving the family, the athlete pays the price.

Inside, you'll learn:

  • Why the most committed young athletes so often burn out first—and how to spot the fade long before the quit
  • What the car ride home is really costing you, and the eight words that change everything
  • How to tell your child's real need from your own anxiety wearing love's clothes
  • Why grades, rest, and a real off-season build better athletes, not weaker ones
  • The 40-Year Plan: how to stop raising a college athlete and start raising an adult who happened to play

This is not a book about lowering the bar. Excellence is still the goal—but the family is the point. A household that wins the trophy and loses each other has won the wrong game entirely.

Because the goal was never the scholarship. The goal was always the person. And you only get one shot at raising them.

If your child plays, read this before the next season starts.

À propos de l'auteur

Author Biography: From the schoolyard underdog to a baseball luminary, my journey in baseball spans over five decades, marked by resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the sport. As a young student-athlete, I often found myself at the tail end of team selections, a testament to my initial struggles on the field. However, I transformed my trajectory through sheer determination and an embrace of failure as a stepping stone. By the time I graduated from high school, not only had I secured a coveted baseball scholarship to Arizona State University, but the Chicago Cubs also chose me in the 1981 MLB draft's 13th round. My extensive experience encompasses over twenty years as a head coach across high school, travel baseball, and NCAA D3 levels. Opting for retirement from coaching as my sons embarked on their baseball journey, I've witnessed firsthand the commercialization of youth baseball, emphasizing its business-centric approach over genuine player development.Having authored four seminal books on youth baseball, I've been recognized for bestsellers such as "Fun Over Fear" tailored for families with budding athletes aged 3-9, "THE PROCESS" for those navigating the challenges of ages 10-16, and "The Recruiting Process" providing insights for families with athletes aged 15-21. My unique vantage point, derived from roles as a player, head college coach, and parent, equips me with a holistic perspective few can claim. This trifecta of experiences allows me to offer invaluable guidance to families, helping them discern the worthwhile from the redundant in the realm of youth baseball. My proudest moments include witnessing my sons' collegiate baseball journeys, with my youngest achieving the remarkable feat of being a two-time MLB FIRST ROUND selection - the sole New England student-athlete to achieve this distinction in the MLB draft's 58-year history.Today, as a public speaker, podcast host, consultant, and celebrated author, I am on a mission to demystify the youth baseball experience. I've had the honor of being a guest speaker at schools and youth programs nationwide, sharing insights and strategies grounded in real-life experiences. My goal? To provide families with a clear game plan, ensuring they invest their time and resources wisely, all while championing the true essence of the sport.
