A river that knows who needs it.
A cabin with a mind of its own.
Almost five years after her father’s death, Misty has decided being alone is emotionally safer. She still hasn’t figured out how everyone else managed to move on.
Her mother certainly has.
She’s remarried and building a new life with a new husband, while Misty is left wondering where that leaves the memory of her father—and her place in this new version of their family.
Then, for reasons she can’t quite explain, Misty books Cabin Zero at the Southern Girls River Club, across the country in a state she can barely point out on a map.
She remembers making the reservation through a strange online ad. She knows she chose it herself. What she doesn’t know is why she felt compelled to go on a whim.
But the river knows.
Along the banks of the muddy Ocoee, Misty finds a river club filled with quirky characters, iced sweet tea, steaming scratch biscuits, and a few oddities nobody seems particularly interested in explaining. There’s a cabin that doesn’t feel quite the same from one day to the next, a river man named Moony who may know more than he lets on, a teenager with a notebook determined to document everything that doesn’t make sense, and a cook who may have been there longer than the camp itself.
And then Misty’s mother arrives.
What began as an escape becomes something more complicated as Misty is forced to confront the grief she has protected, the people she has kept at a distance, and whether making room for something new means losing what came before.
Warm, funny, and touched with the kind of Appalachian wonder folks have been passing down for generations without ever quite explaining, The Southern Girls River Club: Welcome Home blends Southern women’s fiction with cozy fantasy and gentle magical realism in a heartwarming story of mothers and daughters, grief and change, found family, and the friends we meet along the way. It’s about discovering that home can still be home even when it no longer looks the way it once did.
Welcome to the river.
We hope you’ll stay a spell.
